Born and raised in Carthrage, Texas, Clayton started on sheep and later calves but didn’t take riding seriously until he turned 13. Williams was privileged to learn to ride by the legends of the sport.
“Norman Curry was from Carthage and was always at the house giving me pointers. World Champion Owen Washburn would come to the house to buy bulls. My dad put on a bull-riding school with Tuff Hedeman and I attended that school every year.”
The tips paid off as Williams captured the Texas High School Rodeo Association’s bull-riding title in 2004. He regards that experience as one of his great bull riding memories as he was the only bull rider who covered all three of his bulls at the competition — riding Flap Jack for 85 in the championship round.
